Simoncelli quick off the mark at Aragón

Fifth fastest in the dry morning session the Italian was the quickest rookie on day one at the new circuit.

Marco Simoncelli cut a satisfied figure in his San Carlo Honda Gresini team box after the conclusion of the first day of the Gran Premio A-Style de Aragón on Friday, and the Italian had good reason to.

Having set the fifth fastest time in the dry morning session before the rain affected the second practice later in the day Simoncelli was the quickest of the rookies at the new track, and enjoyed learning his way round the Spanish circuit.

“I’m pretty happy, this morning I was quite fast in the dry and I like the circuit a lot. It’s nice on a moped, but with a MotoGP bike it’s a completely different matter!” he said. “It’s not been so bad with the wet conditions… the grip is quite good and we hope that tomorrow is dry. I also want to continue improving until Sunday.”

He added: “It was definitely a good thing to have the extra session because it makes Friday a much more interesting and fun day. I didn't like having just one session in the afternoon. We started out with the setting we found at Misano and it looks like it's a good base for us to work from."
