Márquez primes himself for Motegi challenge

Pole holder for the 125cc Grand Prix of Japan goes fastest in warm up, ahead of Terol, Smith and Espargaró.

Marc Márquez was the quickest rider in 125cc warm up at Motegi on Sunday in preparation for the race, which he will start from pole position. The Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider's lap of 1'58.279 was just over two-tenths of a second outside his effort which secured him his ninth pole of the season for Round 13.

Following on the timesheet was Championship leader Nico Terol at +0.794s, with his Bancaja Aspar team-mate and fellow front-row start Bradley Smith third at a further five-hundredths of a second back. Pol Espargaró, who will start from seventh on the grid, was fourth in the session on his Tuenti Racing Derbi machine.

Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX), Sandro Cortese (Avant Mitsubishi Ajo), Efrén Vázquez (Tuenti Racing) and Jonas Folger (Team Ongetta) completed the top eight.

Marco Ravaioli (Lambretta Reparto Corse) did not take part in the session having been declared unfit for the race, following the diagnosis of a fractured fourth metatarsal in his left foot in a crash during qualifying on Saturday.
