Opening session falls foul of weather as Smith laps fastest

The Bancaja Aspar rider was able to set the quickest lap in the first 125cc practice at Estoril before the worsening rain severely affected the session’s productivity.

Dark cloud at the start of the 125cc first practice at the bwin Grande Premio de Portugal gave way to increasingly heavy rain throughout the 40-minute session on Friday as the riders were forced to cope with worsening conditions.

Bradley Smith (Bancaja Aspar) managed to set a time of 2’00.148 early in the session, but times were of little significance as conditions deteriorated and resulted in a cautious approach from all on track.

Marc Márquez (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport), who could claim the 2010 title this weekend, placed fifth as he opted to avoid taking any unnecessary risks, whilst the two riders still holding hopes of also claiming the Championship – Pol Espargaró and Nico Terol – were wary of the wet track too as they timed in eighth and tenth fastest respectively. The Tuenti Racing rider had a run off at the start of the session as he was served warning of the potential hazards.

Smith did take a fall towards the end of the session at turn two but appeared uninjured as he rose to his feet. Completing the top five on the timesheet were Danny Webb (Andalucia Cajasol), Alberto Moncayo (Andalucia Cajasol), Randy Krummenacher (Stipa-Molenaar Racing) and Márquez, although with substantial time gaps separating them thanks to the weather.

Those experiencing falls in the session also included Jakub Kornfeil (Racing Team Germany), Khairuddin Zulfahmi (AirAsia - Sepang International Circuit Team), wild card Luigi Morciano (Junior GP Racing Team FMI), Adrián Martín (Team Aeroport de Castelló) and Danny Kent (Lambretta Reparto Corse).

The 125cc riders are scheduled to return to the track at 1.05pm local time for the second of today’s practice sessions.
