Simoncelli focused on podium after front row qualification

The San Carlo Honda Gresini rookie came close to his first top-three finish last weekend in Portugal, and after qualifying in third position at Valencia he is determined to step onto the podium tomorrow.

Marco Simoncelli was fast once more on Saturday in qualification for the GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana, booking his first front-row start in the premier class with the third best lap.

Last weekend in Portugal the Italian missed out on a first MotoGP podium by just 0.059s as he placed fourth from tenth on the grid, but having given himself a clear start for Sunday’s race at Valencia Simoncelli has his eye firmly fixed on a rostrum result.

“I’m very happy with my first front row,” he said. “In the last few races we have improved a little bit with each race, and here we have taken another step up. The rhythm I had today could be good for the race so I’m confident for tomorrow and hope to get the podium.”

Simoncelli, who won the 2008 250cc race from pole position at Valencia and whose result in the previous round at Estoril is his best premier class result to date, added: “In the last race at Estoril I got so close to the podium and I started from very far back on the grid. Here I will start from the front and I hope to be there at the end of the race!”
