Ratthapark Wilairot recovering after road accident in Thailand

The Moto2 rider was injured in his home country on Monday morning and suffered severe bruising to his hands and head. He is currently recovering in a Bangkok hospital where his condition is described as “encouraging”.

Ratthapark Wilairot was admitted to the Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday after a motorcycle accident which happened at 3am local time. The Moto2 rider, who had returned to Thailand for the funeral of his father Kristmas Wilairot, was left unconscious and with severe bruising on his hands and to his head as a result of the accident. Ratthapark was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Today (Tuesday) Eduardo Perales, Team Manager of the Thai Honda PTT Singha SAG Team, went directly to the Bumrungrad Hospital upon his arrival in Thailand to check on the status of Ratthapark, and also to provide support to the rider.

Dr. Motril is taking care of Ratthapark who remains in the ICU with his mother Ari Wilairot, who is continually by his side. The current state of Ratthapark is encouraging and through continued medication a clot in his head is disappearing. Ratthapark also has his left eye completely closed but is able to fully understand what is being asked of him, and although he cannot speak because of the ventilator he can respond through gesticulation.

Wilairot is expected to remain in the ICU for another week until he is able to breathe by himself, after which he will begin a six-week rehabilitation period.
