Márquez takes it up a level in second session
The Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider was almost nine-tenths faster than Nico Terol in FP2 at Montmeló as the 125cc title hopeful again set the fastest lap in anticipation of this afternoon’s qualifying.
Marc Márquez led the way again in the 125cc class at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya as he set the standard in the second practice, taking over a second off his top time from yesterday. The Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider’s lap of 1’50.043 was 0.868s clear of the next closest rider, as the 17 year-old continued to emphasise his strength by bettering Randy Krummenacher’s 2007 circuit record lap by just under seven-tenths of a second.
Following on the timesheet was Championship leader Nico Terol, who was the only other rider under to get under 1’51” so far this weekend, with the Bancaja Aspar rider placing himself a further 0.403s ahead of Pol Espargaró in a well spread top three. Espargaró’s Tuenti Racing team-mate Efrén Vázquez was fourth.
Sandro Cortese (Avant Mitsubishi Ajo) completed the top five, and Bradley Smith was sixth. The Bancaja Aspar rider was unable to improve on his time from yesterday, and had a slow-speed highside at Turn 7 at the very end of the session. He was followed on the timesheet by Stipa-Molenaar Racing rider Krummenacher, Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX), Luis Salom (Stipa-Molenaar Racing) and Johann Zarco (WTR San Marino Team).
There was a crash at the very start of the session for Alberto Moncayo (Andalucia Cajasol) and he returned to the track uninjured. Alexis Masbou (Ongetta Team) also had a fall at the halfway point.
