Vázquez takes advantage of quiet 125cc afternoon session
The Bainet Derbi was the fastest rider of the eighth-litre class at Jerez on the first day of the official test, with his main title rivals not taking to the track for the late session.
With the wet conditions from the morning rain still lingering for the 125cc session this afternoon (Saturday), Bancaja Aspar duo Bradley Smith and Nicolas Terol, and Bainet Derbi rider Pol Espargaró opted to not ride, leaving Efrén Vázquez to make the most of the track time.
The Bainet Derbi rider set the quickest 125cc time of the day at 1’56.631, with talented Frenchman Johann Zarco (WTR San Marino Team) just under nine-tenths of a second slower in second, and World Championship rookie Sturla Fagerhaug (AirAsia - Sepang International Circuit Team) third on the timesheet at just over a second off the Spaniard’s pace.
Alexis Masbou (Team Ongetta) and Lorenzo Savadori (Matteoni C.P. Racing) were fourth and fifth respectively. Smith, who as earlier mentioned did not ride in the afternoon, set a time of 1’59.029 in the worse conditions in the first session that placed him sixth on the day’s timesheet.
Luis Salom (Lambretta Reparto Corse), Jonas Folger (Team Ongetta), Marcel Schrötter (Interwetten Racing) and Terol completed the top ten times for the day.
World Championship rookie Muhammad Zulfahmi (AirAsia - Sepang International Circuit Team) and Savadori both suffered falls. Red Bull Ajo Motorsport’s Marc Márquez, who set the fastest time at the first official test at Valencia last week, decided not to ride at all today.
