Márquez keeping cool after phenomenal fifth win

The 125cc World Championship leader added to his formidable run of form with victory at Sachsenring in a race that had a dramatic end, and he is now looking forward to the summer break.

Marc Márquez continued to blaze the trail in the 125cc category at Sachsenring on Sunday where he took his fifth consecutive win of the season, becoming the first rider to achieve as many back-to-back victories in the class since a certain Valentino Rossi did so in 1997.

The 17 year-old Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider was involved in a tight fight for the win with title rival Pol Espargaró until lap 25 of 27, when the Tuenti Racing man’s rear wheel touched the artificial grass on the side of the track causing him to crash. Márquez escaped being taken out despite being in such close quarters, and went on to claim victory which opened up a 26-point lead in the standings over the unfortunate Espargaró.

“The race was very dangerous, especially in the first part,” said Márquez of the contest which started on a wet surface. “The tarmac was wet so we had to be very careful and take it step by step, so I didn’t push in the first part of the race.”

“At the end of the race Pol was there and I think it was a little bit like Silverstone, the same kind of race. I followed him for some laps, took the lead for a few, and when there were three laps to go he crashed when he touched the side of the track. I’m not happy that he crashed, I did the same at Jerez. I was lucky because I came very close to crashing with him.”

As well as his fifth victory Márquez’s result also delivered a century of wins for Derbi in GP racing. “I think the 100th victory for Derbi is more important than my statistic! Now we are having a good run but we need to keep the concentration high, and the most important thing for the Championship to take points every weekend,” said Márquez, before looking ahead to the summer break for the 125cc class before Brno in mid-August.

“A break is always good for the body and the mind, and this four-week time off will be good for every rider,” he said. “Brno is a difficult circuit and Nico Terol will surely be there. To go into the break 26 points in front is very good for my mentality.”
