Estoril in focus with Gavin Emmett
The motogp.com commentator reviews another great weekend’s action as he analyses the bwin Grande Premio de Portugal.
High drama in the 125cc class, an enthralling Moto2 contest and a superb fight for the final podium spot in MotoGP made for another fantastic weekend of action at the bwin Grande Premio de Portugal.
In the premier class Jorge Lorenzo took his eighth win of the season, with Valentino Rossi finishing second at almost nine seconds back in a dry race which followed what had until that point been a wet weekend.
“I think as soon as we knew the conditions were going to be dry, which made it a tricky situation, there were going to be separations between the riders. In the end it was the ones with the better set-ups who rose to the top. That’s why Jorge Lorenzo did it, and he has been so consistent this season because he’s had such a good base set-up,” commented Gavin. “Valentino Rossi wasn’t able to match it, he hasn’t had as many races on the bike this season, and of course all these things factor in.”
Andrea Dovizioso won a fantastic battle with fellow Italian Marco Simoncelli for the final podium spot, crossing the line just 0.059s ahead of the rookie, and Gavin added: “The real battle was for third place and Andrea Dovizioso did fantastically well to beat Marco Simoncelli, who put on a great show and was really aggressive and attacking. Simoncelli will get a podium at some point in the next few races stretching into the start of next season.”
