Top six for Spies on another new track
The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider scored another impressive finish with sixth at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya, but was frustrated by a lack of grip.
Ben Spies was happy with sixth position at a track he had not rode before Sunday, however the American rider felt he could have finished even higher if he had better grip. The rookie, who is currently eighth in the Championship standings, started from the second row as he scored another impressive result, but he left round seven slightly frustrated.
“I’m not really that happy actually,” he said. “The first ten laps didn’t go that well and it was the same story as last week: we didn’t have the grip. When everybody else started having a problem in searching for grip and running wide, they were in the same boat as me and it was fair then and I was able to come through some people. It was hard because we couldn’t pass anybody on the straight, we had to wait for a mistake or something and it’s just frustrating because I think Colin and I are riding super hard.”
He continued: “Sixth place at another track we don’t know I am happy with. For the last few laps of the race we were doing well, we needed one more lap for Bautista but I think we did pretty well.”
Next up is another new challenge for Spies at Sachsenring, where he intends to push hard once more in the search for further points and progress.
“We’ll start with a clean slate at the next race as we always do, and I’m good at doing that. We’ll try 100% like we did today. It’s a long season and I think we’re doing a hell of a job so far,” he concluded.
