Tomizawa going from strength to strength
Moto2™ is powered byThe Moto2 World Championship leader took his second podium of the campaign at Jerez, underlining his status as one of the early frontrunners for the title.
Shoya Tomizawa may have turned many heads by taking victory in the opening Moto2 race of the 2010 season in Qatar, but any question that it may have been a one-off result was answered when the Japanese rider finished second at Jerez in round two.
The Technomag-CIP rider, who crashed on the opening lap of the original race before it was red flagged and restarted, rode another supremely mature contest at the Andalusian circuit in the shortened 17-lap event as he finished behind Toni Elías on the podium.
“I’m very happy to have taken second place and the Championship points, so this is really good for me,” said the delighted 19 year-old, who currently leads the standings with 45 points, ahead of Spaniard Elías and Swiss rider Tom Lüthi.
“It was a very difficult race because every rider was fast and was pushing hard for positions. My tyres were starting to wear and Elías was really fast and I couldn’t pass him,” added Tomizawa.
The crash which led to the restart involved a collision with Simone Corsi, but it failed to interfere with Tomizawa’s concentration as he returned to his garage, regrouped and emerged 30 minutes later to take his impressive result.
“I tried to pass Corsi and he tried to cross my line. I couldn’t stop even though I tried to brake,” he said. “This time I had luck, I could finish in second position. I will try to find more and more points for the Championship as the season goes on.”
