Continuity the key for experienced Elías
Moto2™ is powered byThe Gresini Racing Moto2 rider knows that his consistent form is crucial to his attempt to take the World Championship title.
Toni Elías’ form in the Moto2 class has been a model of consistency so far, with the Spanish rider taking two wins, a fourth and a fifth place from the opening four rounds of the 2010 season. It is a steadiness of high points scoring finishes such as this which could help the Spanish rider achieve his aim of taking the inaugural Moto2 title this season.
At Mugello he placed fifth, which may be his worst result of the season to date but is by no means a poor one. Having had a mixed weekend – he was the 20th fastest rider in FP2, recovering to qualify in second place – the 11 points gained with his classification in the race kept Elías’ momentum at the top of the overall standings moving along.
“I saw how fast Iannone was in warm-up and told the team the race was out of our reach and that proved to be the case. I was hoping for second place but this is a good result for me,” commented Elías. “I had a plan for the last lap but to get myself into the right position I would have needed to go too wide at Correntaio and risk a crash, so I just had to settle for what I had and I’m happy with it.”
The result stretched Elías’ lead at the head of the Championship by a further point over Shoya Tomizawa, and he now has 74 points after four rounds.
“Let’s hope this proves to be our worst result of the season because we’re consistent at the moment and a weekend like Mugello, where I’ve picked up a point more than my closest rival in the Championship, is very important,” he concluded.
