Having won the 125cc race last year and with two Moto2 victories in the last three rounds – including Assen at the weekend – the Fimmco Speed Up rider heads to the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya as one of the favourites.

Andrea Iannone has taken the Moto2 category to task recently, winning rounds four and six at Mugello and Assen and displaying a determination to show that the new intermediate class is one he can excel even further in.

The talented Italian has already shown he has the ability with seven podium visits – six of those wins – to date in his World Championship career which has spanned the 125cc class as well, and he dominated the TIM TT Assen race at the weekend as he did when taking a home victory at Mugello two rounds earlier.

“Credit also has to go to the help afforded by the team. We work in harmony and this makes it easier to achieve good results,” explained the Fimmco Speed Up rider as he celebrated his second Moto2 win of the 2010 campaign at the Dutch track on Saturday.

“It was a very difficult race,” he continued. “Wilairot got in front and a little after that I passed him. This was a good move and an important one too, in order to be able to escape. Behind, Toni (Elías) and the other riders had a very fast pace which meant I couldn’t establish a good gap. It was not until midway through the race was when I was able to do that.”

It was an advantage similar to the one Iannone had at Mugello, where he also rode clear at the head of the race to take victory from pole. A second win at Assen moved him up to fourth in the Championship standings, where he is now 33 points off leader Elías.

“It is important to use my head when working now, maintaining my concentration, because this Sunday it is Catalunya and this will be a difficult GP,” stated Iannone, who won last season’s 125cc contest at the Barcelona circuit, his last victory in the class before moving up to the new Moto2 category this year.
