Agreement signed between Dorna and Motorland Aragon

A deal was signed on Tuesday which confirmed the Aragon Grand Prix at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Alcañiz, Spain as the 14th round of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship. The agreement between Motorland and Dorna Sports also makes the circuit a reserve venue for five years.

President of Aragon, Marcelino Iglesias, said: “The signing of this contract will bring international recognition for Motorland, and makes clear the fact that we have one of the best circuits in the world. It is an extraordinary development for Aragon and promotes it on a world class stage. Projects such as ExpoZaragoza have displayed our organisational capacity, and we hope to demonstrate this in September.”

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta stated: “We are proud to be able to sign this agreement with Motorland Aragon, a venue which shows that Spain is a country with the best circuits in the world.”

Speaking about the organisation of the Aragon Grand Prix, Ezpeleta added: “The intention of Dorna is to constantly innovate and improve. It’s for this reason that when we put in place a reserve circuit we had something new, and which could make a strategic commitment to maintaining the quality of the World Championship. The selection of Motorland was for various reasons, one of which was that it was the only circuit that had a standard of quality which could stand in at any moment from April to October, one of the requirements of the World Championship. This has led us to sign an agreement for five years, and in the first year there is already the task of organising a race, which is not a concern because the circuit is led by people with experience in organising a Grand Prix.”

Vice President of Aragon and leading advocate of the Motorland project, Jose Angel Biel, said: “This project was born ten years ago, and few believed in it. Now it is a reality, a circuit of the 21st Century, designed by the best with a flourishing Technology Park surrounding it and an economical impact which will allow us to see the benefits in only a few years. The feedback for the image of Aragon with an event with an audience of 300 million television spectators is difficult to evaluate, but without doubt it will be different before and after for our community.”
