Weather affects opening day at Estoril

Simone Corsi and Jules Cluzel shared the fastest lap time of the Moto2 class on a first day of Testing in Portugal that was affected largely by poor weather, as they shared the track with the 125cc class.

Morning showers gave way to afternoon sun at Estoril in Portugal on Tuesday as the second pre-season Moto2/125cc Test got underway, with windy conditions making the early part of the first of three days a quiet affair.

First out on track at the World Championship circuit were Moto2 riders Randy Krummenacher, Bradley Smith and Kenan Sofuoglu, the Turkish rider of the Technomag CIP team getting to grips with his Suter and setting the fifth fastest time of the day with a best unofficial lap time of 1’44.4.

The fastest registering riders of the day were Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing) and Jules Cluzel (Forward Racing), who both shared the quickest lap time of 1’43.9 as they managed to take advantage of track when it was in better shape. JiR Moto2’s Alex de Angelis was third fastest at just a tenth of a second further back.

Scott Redding’s pre-season form continued with a best lap of 1’44.4, the same as Sofuoglu, as the Marc VDS Racing Team rider slotted into the top five, with Mattia Pasini (Ioda Racing) and Claudio Corti (Italtrans) following closely. Mika Kallio’s integration from MotoGP also went on, the Finn one of the riders whose track time was limited by the changeable conditions.

In the 125cc class the activity was also affected by the weather, with Nico Terol managing to set the best lap – a 1’49.1 – which was over a second ahead of second-placed team-mate Héctor Faubel, as the conditions dictated the level of productivity.

The riders are due back on track at 9am local time on Wednesday, when all in attendance will hope for conditions more conducive to their pre-season workloads.
