Aoyama on the pace, Simoncelli pushing hard

Aoyama on the pace, Simoncelli pushing hard

The San Carlo Honda Gresini riders placed third and 11th respectively on the timesheet on day one at the Qatar MotoGP Test.

Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Hiroshi Aoyama provided the biggest surprise of the first night's testing in Qatar, ahead of next week's season-opening race at the Losail circuit. Hiroshi was on top form, no doubt inspired somewhat by the troubles in his homeland, which has been the subject of one of the most devastating natural disasters known to man.

Aoyama was motivated, determined and with the good feeling established with the team already during testing in Malaysia he was narrowly bettered only by Team HRC pair Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner.

It was a small homage towards his compatriots affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

For Marco Simoncelli it was an evening of data gathering as he looks to adapt his set-up to the night conditions. No doubt his hard work will pay off on the second and final day of testing before the World Championship officially gets underway, with the riders due on track from 6pm-11pm local time.
