Terol takes first blood in 125cc first practice

Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar) set the fastest time in the opening FP1 at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar in windy conditions at the Losail International Circuit for the opening round of the 2011 season.

The Bankia Aspar rider headed the timesheets throughout the later parts of the session and recorded the quickest lap with a 2’09.122 under the floodlights of Losail. Second and third fastest were the German riders Jonas Folger (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) and Sandro Cortese (Intact Racing Team Germany). Spaniard rider Nico Terol picked up his excellent form from 2010 which saw him narrowly miss out on the title.

Terol was an ominous 0.994 seconds quicker than his nearest rival, Folger. Luis Salom (RW Racing GP) was fourth fastest, with Efrén Vázquez (Ajo Motorsport) fifth and his fellow teammate Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) sixth.

Rounding out the top ten were, Héctor Faubel (Bankia Aspar) finishing seventh. Faubel had been the initial pace setter earlier on in the session when the Spaniards were battling it out for supremacy. Eighth was Sergio Gadea (PEV-Blusens-SMX Paris Hilton)

Maverick Viñales (PEV-Blusens-SMX Paris Hilton) was the first rider of the season to take a fall when he crashed during the session. He was later joined by Jakub Kornfeil (Ongetta-Centro Seta), who suffered a mechanical problem and couldn’t complete the session with five minutes to go.

The four British riders finished outside of the top 10. The highest place Brit’ was Danny Kent (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) in 12th position and Danny Webb (Mahindra Racing) in 16th. Harry Stafford (Ongetta-Centro Seta) recorded 24th fastest and Taylor Mackenzie (Phonica Racing) was down in 26th place.
