Thomas Lüthi tops first Moto2 practice in Barcelona

Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) overtook Aleix Espargaró (Pons HP 40) in the last remaining minutes of the first Moto2 practice session of the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya, followed by Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) in third.

The Moto2 class got the weekend underway as Interwetten Paccock Moto2 rider Thomas Lüthi rose to the top of the first practice run of the Catalunya race weekend, nipping out Aleix Espargaró of the Pons HP 40 team at the end of the session with a fastest time of 1’47.571. Espargaró collected the second quickest time, trailing Lüthi by 0.123s. Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) followed in third with a best time of 1’47.847.

Simón was followed by Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing), who was 0.298s behind him in fourth after making his way to the top five in the latter half of the practice. Fellow Brit Scott Redding of Marc VDS Racing completed the top five with a quickest time of 1’47.939. Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project), who led much of the 45-minute session, finished sixth in the field.

In seventh was younger brother of Aleix, Pol Espargaró (HP Tuenti Speed Up) who continues to add to his recent impressive newcomer times with a quickest lap of 1’48.115. Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP) was a close eighth at just 0.053s behind Pol.

Catalan rider Axel Pons (Pons HP 40) finished an promising ninth and Kenan Sofuoglu (Technomag-CIP) rounded out the top ten, with Italian rider Andrea Iannone (Speed Master) 11th. Current second place points leader in the Moto2 championship Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing) was 27th in the session at 1.631s off the lead time.

Points leader Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol) had a nasty looking crash ten minutes into the practice. He was unhurt but was unable to rejoin the session and finished in the 38th spot.
