Strong start for Zarco

Johann Zarco (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) set the fastest time in the opening FP1 at the AirAsia British Grand Prix under cloudy skies at the Silverstone Circuit for the sixth round of the 2011 season, with Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar) and Sergio Gadea (Blusens by Paris Hilton Racing Team) a close second and third.

The first day of practice for the 125cc class was held on a dry track in cloudy and cool conditions, with five Spanish riders leading the field for most of the session. Championship points leader Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar) topped the timings until Frenchman Zarco, who is currently fifth in the points Championship, seized the spot in the last minute with a fastest lap of 2:16.579.

Seasoned rider Sergio Gadea set a third fastest lap of 2:17.038, with Maverick Viñales behind fellow Spaniard in fourth by 0.800s. Alberto Moncayo (Team Andalucía Banca Cívica) and Efrén Vázquez (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) followed in the fifth and sixth spots. Second in the Championship is Sandro Cortese (Intact Racing Team Germany), whose fastest lap put him in seventh.

Jonas Folger (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) who is currently third in the Championship, finished 12th.

The first British riders in the timings was Danny Webb (Mahindra Racing), who was eighth fastest with a time of 2:18.678. While Danny Kent (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) set a thirteenth fastest time but then crashed out near the end of the session.

British rider Taylor Mackenzie (Phonica Racing) was 25th in the timings, with fellow countryman Harry Stafford (Ongetta-Centro Seta) setting 28th time, and local wildcard rider John McPhee of Racing Steps Foundation KRP at 30th spot in the session.
