Alex de Angelis (JiR Moto2) skillfully led a closely contested first practice of the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland weekend., with the 27 year old Italian beating out Corsi and Smith to the top of the timings.

In the first Moto2 free practice at the Sachsenring circuit, Italian rider De Angelis bettered his fellow countryman Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project) by 0.085s with a time of 1'25.542, which was 0.232s ahead of current third place Championship holder Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Racing), 0.264s quicker than current Championship leader Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) and 0.455s ahead of Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing).

But the star of the session was Spanish rider Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar), who returned to racing six weeks after suffering a serious fracture of tibia and fibula from a fall in the Catalunya race. Simón led the rankings for much of the practice, looking well recovered from his injury to finally finish sixth, less than half a second off the time set by De Angelis with a time of 1'26.007, ahead of riders such as Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing) in seventh and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) in eighth.

Aleix Espargaró (Pons HP 40) posted the ninth fastest time, after suffering some mechanical problems in the engine of his Kalex, while his brother Pol Espargaró (HP Tuenti Speed Up) was fourteenth, just behind Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol) who started out the weekend more cautiously than usual, with a lap time of 1'26.345.

Tenth fastest in the session was French rider Jules Cluzel (Forward Racing), with a time of 1'26.278, ahead of Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) and MZ rider Anthony West in twelfth.
