Cortese fastest in Sepang opener

The Shell Advance Malaysian Grand Prix kicked off with Sandro Cortese setting the quickest pace in the 125cc first practice, ahead of Terol and Faubel.

The 125cc class took to the track for the opening free practice session at a steamy Sepang International circuit, with Sandro Cortese (Intact Racing Team Germany), fresh off a victory at Phillip Island, surpassing Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar) in the last moments of the session by 0.076s with a best lap of 2’15.012. The two were far and away the fastest in the field, with Terol’s team mate Héctor Faubel over half a second off leader Cortese to rank third with a time of 2’15.498.

Efrén Vázquez (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) was a further four tenths behind Faubel, followed closely by rookie Maverick Viñales (Blusens by Paris Hilton Racing) whose lap of 2’15.979 made him the last single cylinder rider under the 2’16 mark.

Sixth in the line up was Johann Zarco (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) with a 2’16.371, with Danny Kent (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) and Jonas Folger (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) the last two within the 2’16” times.

Jakub Kornfeil (Ongetta-Centro Seta) and Adrián Martín (Bankia Aspar) completed the top ten times, while Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) was 19th at his home track with a 2’19.062.

Luis Salom (RW Racing GP) had a fall after the checkered flag, he finished the outing in 14th.
