Redding fastest on Friday, Krummenacher tops later wet session
Moto2™ is powered byRandy Krummenacher (GP Team Switzerland Kiefer Racing) led the final Moto2 practice session held in mixed conditions at the AirAsia British Grand Prix. Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing) remained the fastest rider on Friday in the combined times of the two practice sessions.
Krummenacher rode his Kalex machine to the top of the timings in FP2, after grabbing the top spot from reigning 125cc Champion Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol). Swiss rider Krummenacher rode a fastest lap of 2’12.090 on a drying track, though the fastest time of the day – 2’09.808 – was set by Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing) in the dryer first session. Bradley Smith (Tech 3) set the third fastest lap of FP2 with a time of 2’16.714 after putting in a seventh place time during FP1.
The final practice for the Moto2 class started with the sun shining on a wet track, and all of the riders in the field headed out on rain tyres. With 20 minutes left in the session, the drying track eventually wreaked havoc on the wet options, though water remained on parts of the track. This caused over half the field to enter the pits and wait for either the track to dry or the rain to begin falling again. At 15 minutes to go, fewer than ten riders were on the track.
With the track still drying, several riders changed to slick tyres and entered the track again. Current Championship points leader Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) decided not to risk the slippery conditions for the most part and sat out the majority of the session, only emerging late on to ride three laps.
Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP) ventured out to finish fourth in the session in front of Bradl's fifth place lap, followed by Pol Espargaró (HP Tuenti Speed Up) in sixth, Michele Pirro (Gresini Racing Moto2), who crashed out of FP1, Axel Pons (Pons HP 40) in eighth, Raffaele de Rosa (SAG Team) in ninth and Yonny Hernández (Blusens-STX), whose combined practice time put him in third, was tenth.
