Oettl and Techer take Sachsenring Red Bull Rookies wins
The German and French youngsters were the victors in the double header at the German circuit over the weekend.
The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup was back in action over the weekend at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany, and with two races taking place across the Grand Prix round there was plenty of thrilling action.
In race one on Saturday it was a case of home glory for German youngster Philipp Oettl as the 15 year-old beat South African Brad Binder and Dutchman Scott Deroue across the finish line, following a tight 12-man battle for the lead.
Going into the weekend Australian Arthur Sissis was the Championship leader, but a mechanical problem with his bike before the start of race one saw him ride on a replacement machine, and that meant he finished outside the points. His title rival Lorenzo Baldassarri struck a blow by finishing sixth, collecting ten valuable points in the race for the 2011 crown.
Sunday’s race two saw Frenchman Alan Techer take his first Red Bull Rookies win as he led two Germans, Florian Alt and Willi Albert, across the finish line.
The race was another closely fought affair with a group of ten riders jostling for positions in the lead group, amongst them Sissis and Baldassarri. Sissis took the lead having started from the third row but the bad luck which struck the 16 year-old in race one followed him into race two, as he clipped the back of Alt’s machine in the penultimate corner of the final lap and crashed out.
Meanwhile at the front Techer took glory with Alt and 13 year-old Albert delighting the home crowd, the latter of the two Germans taking his first ever Red Bull Rookies podium finish. Baldassarri finished fourth to assume the lead of the Championship by six points ahead of Sissis with three races of the campaign remaining. Techer and Oettl both also have mathematical chances of claiming the Cup with three rounds to go.
The next round of Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup action is a double-race bill at Brno on August 13th and 14th. You can find more information, results and full standings at the official Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup website.
