Thomas Lüthi emerged as the fastest rider of the day at the Motegi circuit ahead of Championship leader Stefan Bradl and local man Yuki Takahashi.

Interwetten Paddock Moto2 rider Lüthi put in a strong performance on Friday, posting third fastest in FP1 and then taking over at the front with a time of 1’53.002 in the second practice outing, an improvement of nine tenths over his earlier session time. Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) stepped into second in the combined times with a 1’53.182, a near second faster than the German rider’s FP1 fast lap that had him in sixth.

Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing) laid down a flyer in the last seconds to land him third, while Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP), who celebrates his 21st birthday today, topped the session at the 15 minute mark and held the lead spot with consistent fast laps until getting bumped down the line and ending up one tenth of a second behind the Japanese rider to end the day in fourth.

Pol Espargaró (HP Tuenti Speed Up) picked up his pace by a second to land fifth in the combined times, 0.057s ahead of FP1 time topper Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Racing). Seventh went to Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX), whose time of 1’53.583 was 5 hundredths quicker than Championship contender Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol) who improved his time by six tenths, followed by Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) in ninth and Aleix Espargaró (Pons HP 40) in tenth.

Andrea Iannone (Speed Master) was unable to improve on his quick time set in FP1, lapping a tenth slower to land him 11th for the day, followed by Xavier Simeon (Tech 3 B) and Takaaki Nakagami, the one race replacement for Claudio Corti on the Italtrans Racing team.
