Remembering the 125 class: 2001

motogp.com recalls the most memorable and exciting races of the last 20 years in the historical 125cc category.

motogp.com’s special section commemorating the retired 125cc class continues with the 2001 season, the year Manuel Poggiali claimed his first World title and Toni Elias made his mark with his first GP victory at Assen at the controls of a Honda.

The selected race is the Portugal round at Estoril, where Youichi Ui and Manuel Poggiali fought a fierce battle with the Italian Gilera rider triumphing over the Japanese aboard a Derbi by just one thousandth of a second.
