Day one at Jerez underway

The opening day of the Moto2 and Moto3 Test at Jerez saw both categories share track space in a mixed morning session, with Tom Luthi (Moto2) and Maverick Viñales (Moto3) fastest in each class.

Cooler than desired temperatures in the morning at the Southern Spanish track made for a complicated opening to the final pre-season Test, with a number of riders crashing and a red flag temporarily halting proceedings.

Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project Moto2), Mike di Meglio (Speed Master) and Randy Krummenacher (GP Team Switzerland) all went down in tricky conditions, with Ricky Cardus (Arguiñano Racing Team) and Xavier Simeon (Tech 3 Racing) also crashing and forcing the red flag out as the track was cleared.

On the timesheet Thomas Luthi (Interwetten Paddock GP) led the way with a time of 1’42.627 by 2pm local time, followed by Claudio Corti (Italtrans) and Marc Marquez (CatalunyaCaixa Repsol) and Pons Racing duo Esteve Rabat and Pol Espargaro in the top five. Scott Redding (Marc VDS) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3) were 10th and 12th respectively.

In Moto3 Maverick Viñales (Avintia Moto3) was immediately on the pace with newcomer Romano Fenati impressing at just 0.034s off the 2011 125cc Rookie of the Year. Young Brit Danny Kent (Red Bull Ajo KTM) completed the early top three.

The two categories remain on track together until 3.50pm local time, following which Moto2 will ride solo from 4pm-4.50pm with Moto3 having an hour between 5pm and 6pm.
