Stoner leads charge for BMW M Award

Stoner leads charge for BMW M Award

The longstanding cooperation between BMW M GmbH and MotoGP™ organiser Dorna sees the much-coveted BMW M Award hotly contested once again this season with Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner leading the charge after six rounds.

As in previous years, the rider with the best MotoGP™ qualifying results will again be awarded with a BMW M vehicle at the end of the season, which in this case is the stunning BMW M3 Coupé Competition Edition. Despite not leading the championship standings, Stoner has been the best qualifier in the first part of the season, and narrowly leads ahead of Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo and his Repsol teammate Dani Pedrosa.

In addition to the BMW M Award, the German brand has strengthened its presence even further in the MotoGP™ championship, by appointing Dorna MotoGP™ safety consultant Loris Capirossi as the new BMW M MotoGP™ Expert. Based on his extensive know-how, Capirossi will perform a consultant role as the BMW M MotoGP™ expert, with such issues as how to best deploy the BMW M fleet within the MotoGP™ set-up. The Italian commented: "In order to ensure maximum reliability, safety cars have to function perfectly, even under the toughest racing conditions. The high-performance BMW M vehicles fully meet the requirements that apply to safety cars on the race track."

Speaking about the brand’s continued partnership with MotoGP™, Thomas Schemera, Director of Sales with BMW M, added: "Our involvement in this motor racing event gives us perfect access to a crucial target group: motorcycle racers with a predilection for fast cars. The motorcycle world championship offers fascination, emotion, high-tech and international flair - all factors that are closely associated with BMW M. This is another reason why we feel so at home here."

The brand new BMW M6 as well as the BMW M5 are currently used as the series’ safety car, with the BMW 1 Series M Coupé having been replaced by the M6 at the past MotoGP event in Silverstone/UK. All vehicles have been optimized especially for deployment on the racetrack and for leading a motorcycle-racing field.
