Espargaró finishes difficult second free practice on top in Germany

Spells of rain and frequent tyre changes marked this afternoon’s second practice at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at the Sachsenring, where Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Pol Espargaró finished top ahead of Dominique Aegerter and Roberto Rolfo.

The session had started in wet conditions, yet a mostly dry line formed after 15 minutes, allowing Espargaró to set his time. He was however the only rider to make full use of this opportunity, as spats of rain plagued the rest of the session soon after. Technomag-CIP duo Aegerter and Rolfo coped well with the conditions finishing in second and third respectively, as did Arguiñano Racing Team’s Ricky Cardús in fourth.

JiR Moto2’s Johann Zarco, known to be good in the wet, went fifth fastest ahead of Tech 3 Racing’s Xavier Simeon. Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi and Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez both overcame their crashes in the morning practice to finish seventh and eighth quickest, with Mapfre Aspar Team’s Toni Elías and Espargaró’s teammate Axel Pons in tow.

There was only one crash in the afternoon in the form of S/Master Speed Up’s Alessandro Andreozzi, who could not keep his bike upright after running into the gravel. He was fortunately unhurt in the incident. This session will have given very little indication of actual form, as the frequent stops and starts to change tyres for the ever changing weather conditions was more of a fight against the weather rather than the clock.
