Viñales closes gap as Moto3™ heads into summer break

Viñales closes gap as Moto3™ heads into summer break

Many questions had been raised after Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales finished in 17th place in Germany two weeks ago, but he answered any critics in style by taking a hard-fought victory at last weekend’s Moto3™ race at Mugello.

The young Spaniard had been on the pace throughout the weekend yet faced tough competition in the race. He was unable to break away in the latter stages and was entangled in a thrilling battle for first with Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese. The slipstream down the home straight had proved advantageous for many Moto3 riders in the race to pass others, hence the general perception before the race was that one should not lead coming out of the last turn – especially not when renowned KTM power was behind.

Viñales, however, had done his research correctly and knew he could maintain first place over the finish line, to claw back vital points in the championship. With his victory, and Fenati beating Cortese into second, Viñales is now only nine points adrift of top spot.

Maverick Viñales

"It was a very tight victory, and after the bad result in Germany it was great to win again. At first it was impossible to escape the following group, so I waited until the tires wore out a bit to pull away. I finally fought for the victory with Cortese and Fenati and it was great to get it. Many have asked me why I started the home straight on the final lap ahead, knowing that most likely I was going to be overtaken in the slipstream. Anyway, I had taken many turns in front of them and I saw that there weren’t catching me, and also my pit-board indicated that I could make it. I tried it and it went well. There is always room for improvement, but we got some more speed in our bike and we stuck with the KTM."
