Dovizioso frets over factory Yamaha ride

Following yet another great performance for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team at Laguna Seca last weekend, Andrea Dovizioso has once again staked his case for the vacant factory Yamaha seat next year, yet realizes the decision may be too far out of his hands.

With Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies having confirmed his departure at the end of the season, Dovizioso, who has recorded four podiums this season so far on his satellite machine, is one of the riders tipped to potentially make the step up. However, as the teams and riders head into the summer break, ever-greater speculation about Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi has linked the nine-times world champion with a return to the Japanese outfit.

Speaking on his chances and desire to move up for 2013, Dovizioso commented: "This is what I expected, but it looks like Valentino is really close. So I don’t know exactly; it’s not fixed. This is really bad for me because I swapped to Yamaha because I believed I can find a place in the factory team."

He could be forgiven for feeling slightly hard done by, as he has been the second most successful Yamaha rider this season behind championship leader Jorge Lorenzo. He said: "We’ve done the best we can this year and we’ve had four podiums. But it looks like this is not enough to get that place, but we’ll see in the next two weeks."

The Italian should not have to wait too much longer for a decision on his future with Rossi having confirmed that he will be making his mind up before the next race in Indianapolis in just under three weeks time.
