The Moto3™ grid was met with sunny and dry conditions for the morning warm-up at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix where it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese who set the pace ahead of Jonas Folger and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
The German championship leader left it late to top the timesheet this morning, with Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger leading for long parts of the session. Folger, who had a difficult qualifying yesterday that sees him 15th on the grid, will be buoyed by this morning’s performance, proving that he has the pace to challenge the top runners. AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Khairuddin will also be pleased with his showing this morning, as he seeks his first ever podium later in the day. Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales finished the morning fourth, just over three tenths off Cortese. San Carlo Gresini Moto3’s Niccolò Antonelli suffered a lowside half way through the session, yet was able to remount.
Folger’s teammate Hector Faubel was absent for the morning session as he continues to be assessed for his injuries sustained in a crash yesterday. Whilst he did not suffer any serious injuries, he was kept in hospital overnight with belly trauma with abdominal free liquid, which puts him in doubt for today’s race. Caretta Technology’s Jack Miller was also on the sidelines, after breaking his left collarbone for the second time this season yesterday. He will miss the race.
