First free practice in Brno sees Folger on top

In the first Moto3™ free practice for the bwin Grand Prix České republiky at Brno it was Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger who got off to the best start, setting the fastest time ahead of Miguel Oliveira and Sandro Cortese.

Under almost ideal riding conditions it was the young German Folger who continued his resurgence in form at the second track he has been to with his new team, setting the best time of 2.10’271. He was followed by Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Oliveira, who looks to have carried his pace over from the last round, finishing just under four-tenths off the top. Championship leader, Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese, finished just fractionally behind the Portuguese in third.

Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales, who will want to recover from his final corner crash in Indianapolis last time, was fourth quickest, ahead of Cortese’s teammate Danny Kent. The young Brit did however not finish the session, as he crashed out with ten minutes to go. He walked away from the incident unscathed. Oliveira’s teammate Alex Rins was sixth fastest, just over seven tenths off the top time set by Folger.

Team Italia FMI’s Alessandro Tonucci, Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Jakub Kornfeil, Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi and AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin completed the top ten. Apart from Kent’s crash, Mahindra Racing’s Ricardo Moretti took out Andalucia JHK T-Shirt Laglisse’s Alberto Moncayo, while Caretta Technology’s stand-in rider Michael Ruben Rinaldi slid off track at the same time as Technomag-CIP-TSR’s Alan Techer. Moretti suffered fractures to his 6 and 7 ribs, while Techer was concussed in his crash. Both have been taken to hospital for further check ups.
