Aegerter takes meaningful season-best at San Marino

Dominique Aegerter and the Technomag-CIP team celebrated their best result of the year at the Misano circuit on an emotional day that marked the second anniversary of their then rider Shoya Tomizawa’s death.

After a tough qualifying session saw the Swiss rider down in 17th, Aegerter patiently fought his way up through the grid into 10th until the race was stopped for the restart after oil had been spilt by an engine blow-out from Gino Rea. Once the second stint of the race got underway, he fought his way up some more places on fresh rubber, and was able to hold his nerve to take sixth place, which is his best placement yet this season.

This result now puts him equal eighth in the championship with Esteve Rabat on 73 points, just 12 off seventh placed Bradley Smith. With Aegerter having already shown he can lead a race with new tyres, as he did in Indianapolis, the shortened Moto2 race was no doubt a bonus for the Swiss rider, who will undoubtedly take this confidence into the next race in Aragón. He has stood on the podium only once in his GP career, at Valencia last year, and will be aiming to push just a few spots higher for a repeat.

His team manager Alain Bronec was extremely pleased with his performance: "Dominique did not start the week-end very well but he pulled himself together during the race and he did an incredible performance! What a race! He managed the successive starts very well and he earned some good points for the championship where he now stands on the 8th place shared with Esteve Rabat."

Misano was a race with great meaning for the Technomag-CIP team, which was commemorating the second anniversary of Shoya Tomizawa’s death. A short ceremony was organized on Friday before the race, where the accident took place. A memorial day will be organized as a tribute on 21st September – Shoya’s Day. This day welcomes everyone and will host various activities to commemorate the rider.
