In a rain-hit afternoon Moto3™ free practice at the Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón it was Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Miguel Oliveira who mastered the wet track conditions the best, heading Danny Kent and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
Oliveira, who was also fastest in the drier morning session topped the afternoon practice with a 2.16’726 ahead of Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Kent. Kent continued to look in good form, having been fifth fastest earlier in the day. AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Khairuddin also coped well on the wet Aragón track, finishing in third just under three-tenths off the top.
Red Bull’s championship leader Sandro Cortese equalled his morning placement in fourth, displacing Moto FGR’s Jasper Iwema into fifth, with the Dutchman putting in a terrific showing in the wet. RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom came in sixth, just over eight-tenths off Oliveira. Salom will be aiming to get the better of Cortese and Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales this weekend, as he looks to real in the pair in the championship race.
TT Motion Events Racing’s Niklas Ajo made his intentions clear this weekend with setting the seventh best time of the day, ahead of one of the favourites for this weekend, Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger. Salom’s teammate Brad Binder ended the afternoon in ninth, ahead of Folger’s new teammate Luca Amato.
Viñales had a disappointing session for his standards, as he ended the afternoon in 13th. Caretta Technology’s replacement rider John McPhee took a tumble in the latter part of the session after Technomag-CIP-TSR’s Kenta Fujii also crashed out. On the very wet track, times were on average over five seconds slower than in the morning session.
