Rabat on top in Japan first practice

Rabat on top in Japan first practice

In the first Moto2™ free practice at the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan it was Tuenti Movil HP 40’s Esteve Rabat who posted the fastest time ahead of teammate Pol Espargaró and Marc Márquez.

Rabat’s time of 1.52’169 set the benchmark for the Moto2 grid, as the Spanish rider beat both teammate and compatriot Espargaró by less than a tenth on the Kalex machine. Making it a Spanish top three was Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez, who was just over a tenth off the top.

Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding continued his good run of form from his last race, as he put his machine in fourth in the latter stages of practice. Top local rider was Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami, who came in fifth, despite crashing out on his final hot lap. His substitute teammate Toni Elías impressed on his first outing for the team, finishing the morning session in sixth.

Came IodaRacing Project’s Simone Corsi was the quickest FTR machine once more in seventh, with JiR Moto2’s French rookie Johann Zarco closely behind in eighth. Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2’s Nico Terol will no doubt be pleased he made the top ten in ninth, ahead of Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi in tenth. Lüthi was unfazed by a crash early in the session, whilst Tech 3 Racing’s Bradley Smith, who crashed on the same lap, was taken to the medical centre with mild concussion.
