Cortese quickest in Motegi final free practice

Cortese quickest in Motegi final free practice

In the final free Moto3™ practice at the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan in Motegi it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese who went quickest ahead of Danny Kent and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.

Championship leader Cortese confirmed himself as the favourite for this weekend with a fastest lap of 1.58’739, beating his teammate Kent by just over two tenths of a second. AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin continues to have one of his best weekends to date, as he once again pushed himself into the top three with a quick lap towards the end of the session.

Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins, who had a subdued day yesterday looked to have found his form this morning as he came fourth, ahead of Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales, who is over six tenths off the time set by Cortese. Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger, who will once again be a podium favourite this weekend, was held up in his final fast lap and could not improve on sixth place.

RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom, currently second in the championship and still with a shot at the title, was seventh quickest ahead of Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi, who took an excursion into the gravel as he pushed too hard in the latter stages of practice. JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez and Team Italia FMI’s Alessandro Tonucci completed the top ten.

Tonucci’s teammate Romano Fenati crashed very early in the session, as did Mahindra Racing’s compatriot Riccardo Moretti. Andalucia JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Alberto Moncayo almost dropped his bike in the gravel avoiding a cruising Viñales, but managed to stay upright. None of the riders were injured.
