Espargaró steals the show in Australia with record win

Tuenti Movil HP 40’s Pol Espargaró put in a performance bar-none at last weekend’s AirAsia Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island in the Moto2™ race, winning by the biggest margin in the class so far.

Despite having started from pole, Espargaró did not get the best of starts, and had to fight his way to the front. Yet from lap two the Spaniard was in front and started to put in laps that remained unrivalled throughout. And whilst the rest of the field fought it out for the final podium spots behind, Espargaró crossed this finish line almost 17 seconds ahead of second placed Anthony West, in what was the highest winning margin since the Moto2™ class came into effect in 2010.

Heading into the race there had been a small mathematical chance of still fighting for the title, yet with Marc Márquez taking those honours, Espargaró has now been confirmed as the championship runner up.

“Surely that was biggest and best racs of my career. I felt very comfortable in Phillip Island from the first practice and needed a race like this, because so far it has cost me at times not to carry over my form from practice. We lost the title mathematically and I congratulate Marc Márquez, who has been a champion, but I said we would fight until the last breath and we did.”

"I did not want surprises, I went for it after the first lap and I ran away with it at a brutal pace that I didn’t drop until the chequered flag. I hope to finish 2012 well in Valencia to celebrate with family, friends, and fans and Espargarins [fan club], and then start working hard so that 2013 can be my year."
