Khairuddin starts strong at home Grand Prix in Sepang

Friday, 19 October 2012

Malaysian Moto3 rider Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin produced a strong performance on the opening day of the 2012 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix as he managed a top three finish in both free practice sessions at Sepang International Circuit today.

Expressing satisfaction in the achievement, the young Malaysian, however, cautioned the need for the team to continue to keep the momentum throughout the weekend and to continue working hard to stay with their rivals.

“We are definitely on track to securing our target… but, we need to keep the momentum throughout the weekend. The bike was good; but I believe we can go even faster,” Khiaruddin said.

After clocking 2.15’324 seconds in the opening free practice session in the morning, the Malaysian rider bettered his best lap time around the 5548m track to 2.15’340 seconds in the afternoon session to stay in third in the timesheet behind Jonas Folger and Sandro Cortese. “I have never actually raced on a wet Sepang track. Not even during my cub prix days,” said the Malaysian, who is making his fourth appearance on the world stage in Sepang; beginning with his landmark entry as a GP wildcard rider in 2009 where he finished in 20th position.

The KTM rider said that his AirAsia SIC Ajo Racing Team would still need to work on cutting more milliseconds to stay on top of the competition and to realize their target of a first ever podium.

Khairuddin, who will be celebrating 21st birthday tomorrow, said: “We need to go faster as we know that the other teams would be working on their bike to push for more speed and acceleration in qualifying tomorrow. We had a good setting for the bike today but we may need to make some minor adjustments.

“Overall, I am very happy with my performance. But, we need to stay calm and focus on our strategies and target,” he said. Khairuddin also had the honour of topping the Top Speed & Average Time with a top speed average time of 219.2km/h.
