Injured Lorenzo makes up with Bautista ahead of Sachsenring

Monday, 2 July 2012

Following the incident at last weekend’s Iveco TT Assen, which saw Álvaro Bautista take out Jorge Lorenzo in the first turn, Lorenzo has been declared race-fit for the next round and has sought to diffuse the harsh comments aimed at his compatriot.

The accident, for which San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Bautista has been handed a final-grid-slot penalty for the next race in Germany, saw Yamaha Factory Racing’s Lorenzo suffer a heavily sprained right ankle. The Mallorcan rider did not initially receive treatment at the track, yet the following day was in considerable discomfort, prompting him to head to hospital in Barcelona for a diagnosis. Doctors claimed he was lucky not to have broken his ankle, which would have definitely kept him out of the next two races.

Following some strong words after the incident in last Saturday’s race, Lorenzo also commented that he had perhaps been too outspoken in the heat of the moment, and now firmly accepts Bautista’s apology and does not hold a grudge against his compatriot. He added that he was sure Bautista will not repeat such a reckless manoeuvre again.

Lorenzo, who was leading the championship by 25 points before the Assen race, is now level on 140 points with Repsol Honda Team’s Casey Stoner, and will be looking to put in two strong performances at the up coming races at Germany’s Sachsenring and Italy’s Mugello.
