Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi closed the gap to second placed Pol Espargaró in the Moto2™ world championship standings with a hard-fought second place at Brno last weekend.

Having taken the lead in the race early on, he was followed closely by Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez for the majority of the race, unable to break away at the front. He could not get past the Spaniard once he took him for first, yet clung to his rear wheel until the very end. He did however manage to beat Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Espargaró, who finished third, which now sees him just 11-points off the Spaniard in the championship standings.

With six races remaining and Lüthi looking back the type of form he showed in the opening round in Qatar, the Swiss rider will no doubt be hoping to secure second spot, and even challenge Márquez at the top if the chance arises.

Tom Lüthi

"I knew the fast guys were behind me. Marc, Pol and Iannone were there. I saw that on the [pit] board. I tried to keep my rhythm and to save my tyres for the end because I knew some of these guys would try to attack me and try to make a break. And then Marc passed me, and the first time I fought back straight away, but then I saw his bike was very fast on the straight. So I tried to follow him; it was quite hard to follow him. He tried to make a break but then I was straight behind him into the last lap and I prepared to attack again as we entered into the corner. But he was so fast on the straight that I could not end up next to him to enter on the brakes and I had to take second place. For sure after this race I’m a little bit disappointed, but still, with 20 points out of it I think we can be happy with that."
