Pedrosa nears top-ten MotoGP™ all-time winners list

Friday, 7 September 2012

At the Czech GP in Brno, Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa stood on the top step of a Grand Prix podium for the 41st time, just one less than Toni Mang and Max Biaggi, who are joint tenth in the all-time list of Grand Prix winners.

Pedrosa, who looks in ominous form at the moment after his hard-fought victory against Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo last time out would also need just two more wins to catch his Spanish rival who sits ninth on 43, with his injured Repsol teammate Casey Stoner in eighth on 44.

In addition to this, all of Pedrosa’s 41 Grand Prix wins have been taken on Honda machinery, which is the same number of wins on a Honda as the legendary Mike Hailwood, who won five world titles riding for Honda in the 1960’s (3 x 250cc + 2 x 350cc). The only two people with more wins on Hondas are Jim Redman on 45 and Mick Doohan on 54.

Whilst the records will undoubtedly be a significant factor in his career, the premier-class world title has so far eluded the Spaniard. Yet this year is shaping up to be the best year of his MotoGP™ career, having scored 232 points from the first twelve races. If he finishes either first or second at Misano he will exceed his previous highest total point score for a full season in the premier-class class, which is 249 in 2008. He currently lies only 13 points behind championship leader Lorenzo with six races and a total of 150 points still up for grabs.
