In the first Moto3™ free practice session at Phillip Island for the AirAsia Australian Grand Prix it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s World Champion Sandro Cortese who was on the pace as he led Danny Kent and Jonas Folger.

Conditions were good for the grid with the sun shining, albeit with temperatures slightly lower than what they have been used to of late. Cortese, despite having been crowned Moto3™ world champion last time out, showed no signs of taking it easy, as he posted the fastest time of 1.39’902 on the first outing around the popular track. He was over four tenths ahead of his teammate Kent, who will be looking for his second win this season, while podium regular, Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger, was a further tenth behind.

This session also saw the return of Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales, who was back with the team after making a public apology. His first outing looked to have gone well on the timesheets, however he did crash his bike towards the end. He finished in front of Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Miguel Oliveira and JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez. AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin, who had a fantastic race last time out, finished this morning in seventh, ahead of Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Jakub Kornfeil.

RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom, who will be fighting Viñales for second in the championship, came in eighth, ahead of Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati. Technomag-CIP-TSR’s Alan Techer was an early crasher, with Fastline GP Racing’s wildcard Sam Clarke and Oliveira’s teammate Alex Rins following suit.
