In the final free Moto3™ practice session of the AirAsia Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese who came out on top ahead of Alberto Moncayo and Jonas Folger.

The session got off to a worrying start as San Carlo Gresini Moto3’s Niccolò Antonelli suffered a heavy crash five minutes in. Following a red flag period during which the Italian rider received treatment, proceedings got back underway. Antonelli has been deemed ok by the medical centre pending further check-ups, yet does not remember the accident.

Once the Moto3™ grid got back on track it was Cortese who set the fastest time of the weekend so far in dry conditions with a 1.38’811, ahead of Andalucia JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Alberto Moncayo, who made a welcome appearance near the top of the timesheets after a good session. Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger came in third, and was one of the few riders not to improve on his time this morning. Red Bull’s Danny Kent remained a consistent fourth once again, ahead of TT Motion Events Racing’s Niklas Ajo, who had a big wobble on his final hot lap, sending him onto the grass.

RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom, who will be in the battle for second place in the championship tomorrow, came sixth ahead of Rookie challenger, Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins. Rins’ teammate Miguel Oliveira was closely behind, with Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati and Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales in tow. Viñales remains eighth in the combined timesheets. There were two fallers after the restart, which were AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Racing Team Germany’s Toni Finsterbusch. They fortunately walked away from the crashes unscathed.
