Viñales heads final free practice at Catalunya
In once again sunny conditions it was Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales who went fastest in the final free practice session of the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya in front of AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
Viñales put on a show in front of his home crowd by setting the fastest time of the morning with a 1.52’494 ahead of a charging Khairuddin, who is looking for his first ever podium this weekend. Third place went to Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Danny Kent, who consolidated his good form shown yesterday.
Kent’s teammate and championship Sandro Cortese went fourth fastest, though suffered a heavy crash three minutes before the end. Initial assessment is a pain in his right hand, yet without any fractures or serious injuries.
In fifth, Caretta Technology’s Alexis Masbou was showing some good form with a time just under seven tenths down from the leader, in front of Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins. Rins, the second Spaniard in the top ten ousted his compatriot Luis Salóm of the RW Racing GP squad into seventh, and his teammate Miguel Oliveira into eighth.
Yesterday’s pace setter, Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi could not match yesterday’s performance and finished ninth, while Estrella Galicia 0,0’s wildcard entry Alex Márquez rounded out the top ten. Other wildcard, Racing Steps Foundation’s John McPhee, retired 17 minutes before the end after an issue with is bike.
