Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Pol Espargaró made his intentions clear in the first free practice of the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM at Mugello by setting the fastest time in front of Andrea Iannone and Tom Lüthi.

Following yesterday’s announcement that Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez had signed for the Repsol Honda Team in MotoGP™ next season, the dust had settled and Moto2™ was back in full swing as Espargaró laid down the marker for the weekend with a 1.53’139. He was followed closely by Speed Master’s Andrea Iannone, who is keen to impress in front of his home support. Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi was showing some good form once more as he completed the top three, less than a tenth down on Espargaró. Lüthi had a scare at turn one as he ran into the gravel trap, yet managed to steer his bike back on track.

Tech 3 Racing’s Bradley Smith looks to have taken a positive step forward on his Mistral 610 machine as he came in fourth, despite also running into the gravel in the latter stages. Márquez brought his bike home in fifth, ahead of Came IodaRacing Project’s Simone Corsi. Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding, who is looking to make amends for his crash in Germany, finished seventh, ahead of GP Team Switzerland’s Randy Krummenacher.

Italtrans Racing Team’s Claudio Corti finished ninth aboard his Kalex machine, ahead of Redding’s teammate and last race’s podium sitter Mika Kallio. Mike Di Meglio, standing in for the inured Alexander Lundh at Cresto Guide MZ Racing crashed in the opening stages of the session. He fortunately walked away unscathed.
