Lorenzo breaks track record in final free practice in Italy

Saturday, 14 July 2012

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo was on blistering pace in the final free practice at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM at Mugello, where he set a new track record ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner.

The MotoGP™ contingent did not hold back in this morning’s session as all top five riders went below the track record set by Repsol Honda Team’s Casey Stoner last year of 1.48’034. Lorenzo put in his hot laps from the off and soon posted a time almost half a second below with a 1.47’584, with Repsol Honda’s Pedrosa less than a tenth behind. Stoner looked to have found some pace after a subdued session yesterday, finishing just over two tenths off the front.

Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies will be please with his improved showing this morning, as he went fourth quickest toward the end of the session, relegating Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Andrea Dovizioso into fifth. Dovizioso did however do enough to hold of the charge from his teammate Cal Crutchlow, who will be looking to get one over on his Italian teammate this time out.

Seventh spot went to Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden, followed by Pramac Racing Team’s Héctor Barberá, who had both been high up the timesheets yesterday after posting times with the softer option rear tyre. They were the only two riders in the top ten not to improve on their times yesterday. LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl looks to be struggling slightly this weekend, as he once again could not place higher than ninth. Yet it was Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi, sporting a traditionally new helmet design, who was again low down the order in tenth, seemingly focusing on race pace.

San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Álvaro Bautista’s bad run at the track continued as he crashed out for the third time this weekend after loosing the front of his satellite Honda. He walked away unhurt, yet looked to be lacking confidence in his bike around the Mugello circuit. Top CRT effort went to Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaró, who put in a tremendous lap towards the end of practice.
