Folger in dominant form in final Sepang free practice

Saturday, 20 October 2012

Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger continued his dominance at the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Sepang during the final free practice ahead of qualifying, finishing ahead of Alex Rins and Miguel Oliveira.

Folger, who was the clear pace-setter yesterday, looked once again in a league of his own as he set the fastest time so far of all three practice sessions with a 2.13’953, which was nearly seven tenths ahead of the closest challenger, Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Rins. The Suter-Honda combination looked to be working well in the morning practice, as his teammate Oliveira went third quickest, also beating his time from yesterday.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s championship contender Sandro Cortese looked comfortable in fourth, however it was his closest rival, RW Racing GP’s Luis Salom, who took a big step forward by finishing fifth, just marginally off the German. Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Jakub Kornfeil continued his good run of form, as he once again made progress within the top ten to finish the morning in sixth, ahead of Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi.

San Carlo Gresini Moto3’s Niccolò Antonelli looked to have made tremendous strides, after improving on his 24th place finish yesterday to come in eighth, with JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez and Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati completing the top ten.

In the early part of practice, Salom’s teammate Brad Binder suffered an engine problem, whilst there were crashes for TT Motion Events Racing’s Niklas Ajo, AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin, Fenati’s teammate Alessandro Tonucci and Technomag-CIP-TSR’s Alan Techer. Ajo’s crash was quite a heavy one, with the Finn suffering a fracture in his fifth metatarsus in his left foot and a small concussion.
