Petrucci quickest as damp track thwarts Misano first practice

Friday, 14 September 2012

On a damp and drying track less than 10 riders took to the Misano circuit for the first free practice at the Gran Premio Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera de Rimini with Came IodaRacing Project’s Danilo Petrucci heading Michele Pirro and James Ellison.

With the track still damp from earlier rain, the majority of riders remained in their box for the session, with very little to be learned on the track. Only two factory riders took to the track in the form of Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies and Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden, who went out for a brief spell to test conditions, but came back in very soon. Spies went fifth fastest ahead of Hayden in sixth.

Yet it was Petrucci, riding for the first time on the Ioda-Suter BMW machine, that stole the headlines as he stole top spot with a 1.43’178, just over one tenths ahead of compatriot Pirro on board his San Carlo Honda Gresini FTR-Honda CRT machine. Paul Bird Motorsport’s James Ellison came in third, over two seconds off the top, ahead of Avintia Blusens’ David Salom, who was making his MotoGP™ debut, having replaced Iván Silva.

Salom’s teammate Yonny Hernandez, Speed Master’s Mattia Pasini and NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards rounded out the top nine, yet were not out on track in the latter stages when the faster times were set. Some of the riders who did not go out on track cited too great a risk for too little reward as the main reason. With many having tested in the preceding break, few will be worried by missing the morning session.
