JIR Moto2´s French rookie Johann Zarco was in impressive form this morning as he set the fastest lap in the first Moto2™ free practice of the Gran Premio bwin de España in Jerez, as the whole field had to contend with heavy rain and low track temperatures of 16°C.

Zarco, who finished 12th in his maiden race in Qatar, recorded a mighty lap time of 1.55´382, over eight tenths faster than second placed Andrea Iannone. The Italian Speed Master rider left it very late in the session to steal second spot, having hovered around 17th place for the majority of practice. Rounding out the top three was Tech 3 Racing´s Xavier Simeon, finishing within one tenth of Iannone.

After a difficult start to the season, wet weather specialist Ant West made the most of the conditions to give his QMMF Racing Team something to smile about, as he placed his Moriwaki fourth. Marc VDS´ British rider Scott Redding rediscovered some of his pre-season testing form as he stole fifth spot from compatriot Bradley Smith on his Tech 3 bike.

Pons 40 HP Tuenti´s Pol Espárgaro and Blusens Avintia´s Julián Simón gave the home crowd something to cheer about as they took seventh and eight spot respectively. This was Simón´s first outing since the team switched to a Suter chassis from the previous FTR.

Rounding out the top ten were Interwetten-Paddock´s Thomas Lüthi, who had a slightly subdued session, and NGM Mobile Forward Racing´s Alex De Angelis.

A couple of riders fell foul of the conditions, including Thai Honda Gresini Moto2´s Ratthapark Wilairot, as he lowsided his bike in turn three with 10 minutes left to go. Shortly after, GP Team Switzerland´s Randy Krummenacher followed suit as he crashed in the middle of the track, causing the red flag to come out with four minutes left on the clock. Yet with no damage to either rider, the session was soon resumed.

Championship leader and home favorite, Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol´s Marc Marquez, was lapping almost four seconds slower than Zarco at the front, ending the session in 14th.
