Pedrosa sets the pace in final MotoGP™ free practice

Saturday, 5 May 2012

In the best conditions so far this weekend it was Repsol Honda Team´s Dani Pedrosa who set the pace before qualifying at the Grande Prémio de Portugal Circuito Estoril ahead of his teammate Casey Stoner.

With a time of 1.37´326, Pedrosa laid down the marker for this afternoon´s qualifying session ahead of the Australian, who was just over one hundredth behind the Spaniard. Pedrosa had a scare half way through the session as he had to park his bike off-track with a mechanical issue. After returning to the pits however, he remounted his second bike, on which he posted the fast lap.

In third place, Yamaha Factory Racing´s Jorge Lorenzo was back on the pace after a subdued showing yesterday, finishing just over three tenths off his compatriot.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3´s Cal Crutchlow, who´s consistently fast performances are becoming ever less of a surprise, finished fourth after a good stint, ousting his teammate Andrea Dovizioso into fifth. In sixth place, San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Álvaro Bautista continues to make good strides aboard his satellite Honda.

Ducati Team´s Valentino Rossi left it late to creep up the timesheet, and will be pleased with his best dry showing so far this weekend in seventh. He also finished just a second off the top and took honours of top Ducati. He finished in front of Lorenzo´s teammate Ben Spies, who is more comfortable with his new bike settings, yet will be looking for more pace in qualifying.

Ninth spot went to Ducati´s Nicky Hayden, while the top ten was completed by LCR Honda MotoGP´s Stefan Bradl. Heading up the CRT contingent is Power Electronics Aspar´s Frenchman Randy de Puniet, who was 12th fastest.
